Many Catfish Found Dead in Protected Area for Unknown Reasons

BATTAMBANG: Many catfish have been found dead every day since 15 December in the Reang Pen 3 Conservation Area in Ek Phnom District, Battambang Province.

According to the Deputy Director of the Rang Pen 3 Conservation Area, Hor Sam Ath, on Tuesday evening, 27 December, many catfish died and were found floating across dozens of hectares in the conservation area for reasons unknown.

"The dead catfish in this conservation area are alarming; they are about four to five months old and weigh two to three grams each, and this is the second time many have been discovered dead," he said. "Previously, in 2018, there [was a similar case of many dying fish], but a different species of fish."

According to Deputy Director Hor Sam Ath, the fish do not seem to be dying from electrofishing or from poisoning. A team is currently investigating the case.
